Appleton Calling Artists for Biennial Exhibition
March 24, 2014
The Appleton Museum of Art, College of Central Florida, is calling for Florida-based installation art for the juried exhibition “2014 Biennial: Installation Art by Florida Artists,” which runs July 19 through Oct. 19. The call invites artists to submit work by May 5 for consideration.
Monetary awards for the Appleton’s 2014 Biennial will be $3,000 for Best of Show, $1,200 for Second Place, $500 for Honorable Mention and $500 for People’s Choice.
Installation art is installed or arranged in a space as dictated by the artist. “Installation art is one of the fastest growing areas of 21st century artistic production, stretching the boundaries and definition of art,” said Ruth Grim, Appleton curator of exhibitions. “It is conceptual, interactive and often represents the cutting edge of art of our time. Florida installation artists are producing some of the most dynamic, thought-provoking and beautiful works of art today.”
The juror of this exhibition is Dr. Matthew McLendon, curator of Modern and Contemporary Art at The John and Mable Ringling Museum of Art in Sarasota under the aegis of Florida State University. McLendon is faculty at FSU where he teaches graduate seminars in contemporary art and museum practice, and is adjunct faculty at New College of Florida, the State Honors College.
An application form, with details and submission guidelines, is available on the Appleton’s website at AppletonMuseum.org or by contacting Grim at 352-291-4455, ext. 1837.
In addition to temporary exhibitions, the Appleton Museum of Art presents a permanent collection of European, American and contemporary art, plus Asian, African, Islamic and pre-Columbian artifacts and antiquities. The museum is open 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday, noon to 5 p.m. Sunday and closed on Monday, Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Year’s Day.
