Appleton Museum of Art celebrates holidays with exhibits, music, events and more

Celebrate the holiday season at the Appleton Museum of Art, College of Central Florida, with “A Dickens’ Christmas: Selections from the Urban Family Collection,” the Ocala Art Group’s “A Toast to the Arts: Yesterday, Today and Tomorrow,” and “Selections From the Florida Watercolor Society’s 42nd Annual Exhibition.”

Daily admission to the Appleton Museum is $6 for adults; $4 for seniors 55 or better and students 19 and over; $3 for youths ages 10-18; and free for members, CF students, children age 9 and under, and active military personnel and their immediate families.

“A Dickens’ Christmas: Selections from the Urban Family Collection” will be on display Nov. 16 through Jan. 5, 2014. The museum’s lobby and first floor galleries will be filled with decorated trees, miniature villages, nutcracker soldiers and countless items collected over the years by Dr. Paul and Joyce Urban and their daughters Katie, Kristie, Kassie and Karlie. There will be free admission to “A Dickens’ Christmas” exhibit during Family Days Dec. 7 and 21 from 1 to 3 p.m.

“Yesterday, Today and Tomorrow” features works in a variety of mediums, including oils, acrylics, mixed media, pastels, pen and ink, and sculpture. Visitors have an opportunity to cast votes for their favorites and a People's Choice Award will be presented at the closing of the exhibit, Jan. 5. “Selections From the Florida Watercolor Society’s 42nd Annual Exhibition” features 35 of the best watercolors produced by artists from Florida and around the country and continues through Jan. 19. “New World Treasures: Artifacts from Hernando De Soto’s Florida Expedition” closes Dec. 31.

Special programs in December include “Drawing the in the Galleries” 3-5 p.m. and “Rhythm and Art: After Hours” with the Marion Civic Chorale from 5-8 p.m., both Dec. 5. The “First Saturday” children’s art session Dec. 7 from 1 to 3 p.m. will feature “Holiday Surprises.” A docent-led tour, “Mayan Art in Culture,” Dec. 26 at 2 p.m. will focus on the Appleton’s Pre-Columbian collection. A series of educational art films are shown in the Auditorium each Sunday at 2 p.m.

In addition, the Appleton Museum of Art offers a permanent collection of European, American and Contemporary art, plus Asian, African, Islamic and pre-Columbian artifacts and antiquities. The museum is open 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesdays through Saturdays, noon to 5 p.m. Sundays and closed on Mondays, Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Year’s Day. A 12-month membership is available for $25 for seniors 55 and over, $30 for adults 18 and over, $40 for two seniors over age 55, $50 for a family of two adults and any children under age 18, and $15 for all college students and current or retired educators.
