CF to Show Astronaut Tom Jones' Lecture 'Beyond Earth: America's Future in Space'
Nov. 18, 2013
The College of Central Florida will show the lecture video “Beyond Earth: America’s Future in Space” with veteran astronaut and planetary scientist Tom Jones Thursday, Nov. 21, from noon to 1 p.m. in the Ewers Century Center, Room 101, at the CF Ocala Campus, 3001 S.W. College Road.
The presentation is in partnership with IHMC, Florida Institute for Human & Machine Cognition. Jones spoke at IHMC’s Ocala office Sept. 11 and this is a recording of that presentation.
In the video Jones, who has spent 53 days working and living in space, takes stock of our nation’s prospects for building on a half-century of space exploration. Americans continue to fly and learn from the International Space Station, but astronauts now ride Russian spacecraft to get there. Launching U.S. astronauts aboard privately built, American rockets is still three to four years away.
NASA plans to put astronaut crews into deep space, around and beyond the moon, by the early 2020s. By bringing the skills and resources of commercial firms and international partners into play, the U.S. may be able to use natural resources from the moon and asteroids to expand the space economy and plan an affordable path toward the human exploration of Mars.
