CF Presents 81 Scholarships to Fifth-graders
Aug. 26, 2013
The College of Central Florida Foundation is taking giant steps in providing opportunities for Marion, Citrus and Levy county fifth-graders. At the close of the school year, 81 students at 46 schools were presented STEPS, Scholarships Taking Elementary Promising Students to CF.
The program awards $4,000 scholarships to deserving fifth-grade students who have excelled academically and who can benefit from the incentive of having a college scholarship at an early age. The students must maintain good grades and remain drug and crime free through their high school years. In return, each receives $4,000 toward an education at CF.
Mary Kraus, a native of Marion County and a faithful supporter of the CF Foundation, has funded seven STEPS scholarships and presented awards to 29 students. “When I present the awards to these young people, I feel it is a privilege to help them achieve their potential,” Kraus said.
Since the program was implemented in 2005, 351 scholarships have been presented: 260 in Marion, 43 in Citrus, and 48 in Levy. The goal is to have two scholarships at each school — one for a girl and one for a boy. Currently there are three schools with no scholarships and 12 in need of a second award.
