Partnering With Our Community
The college provided learning opportunities beyond the classroom for a community with diverse interests.
Authors Art Linkletter and Mark Victor Hansen brought humor and insight to the community as they discussed their book How to Make the Rest of Your Life the Best of Your Life during a visit to the Ocala Campus sponsored by the college and the Centers.
Col. Matthew Bogdanos shared his tale of the recovery of artifacts from the Iraq National Museum.
Faculty members brought noted poets Li-Young Lee and Carol Frost to the Ocala Campus and earned a faculty Constellation award for their efforts.
The Learning Theme for 2006-2007 was Integrity: Sustainability, A Value for Life. The books representing the theme were The Yearling by Marjorie Kinnan Rawlings and Affluenza: The All-Consuming Epidemic by John de Graaf, David Wann, Thomas H. Naylor and David Horsey. The college collaborated with the Marion County Public Library, which chose The Yearling for its One Book, One Community project.
Learning theme events included a visit by Marjorie Kinnan Rawlings impersonator Betty Jean Steinshouer, Florida authors Bill Belleville and J.T. Glisson, and Affluenza author John de Graaf; showings of the The Yearling and Cross Creek; and a guided walk of Pat’s Island in the Ocala National Forest. The Levy Center hosted Florida nature photographer John Moran and Dr. Ron Cooper, who addressed Our Place in Nature.
