Međugorje, Herzegovina became a famous pilgrimage site beginning in 1981 when six young children claimed to see apparitions of the Virgin Mary on a mountain top. It is visited by millions from around the world as a shrine and place to recover from physical addictions. I participated in this pilgrimage in 2004, gathering oral histories. I took this picture on top of the mountain at the place of the first apparition. |

In this picture I have just completed my first of three Vierbergelauf pilgrimages. Here I am with one of my oral history partners, Sigrid Petrasch (right) resident of Klagenfurt, Austria. |
![]() The Nazi concentration camp in Mauthausen (classified as a so-called "category three camp," the fiercest category) was famous for its torturous rock quarry and experiments conducted with ‘freezing’ showers to induce hypothermia. This photograph taken during my field trip with students shows the double crematory oven in the underground area between the hospital building and the bunker. |
