Ghazaling Negro Dreams

(In 1906, September 6th, an Atlanta Constitution article claimed that a woman died of a heart attack, after seeing a Negro in her dreams)

Did a big black buck scare Ms. Anne Morgan or
Was it Uncle Ben? The Negro in your dreams.

Did Jemima break the ladle against your shin?
Or was it the Negro in your dreams?

Ms. Anne, did his black face jig you into a spin?
The Negro in your dreams?

Your daddy said to hang him high,
Drinking his cup of gin. Or was it the Negro in your dreams?

Remember how you kissed your dark lover, Ms. Anne,
full lips of black skin, the Negro in your dreams.

Every night you cried for him, that gigantic myth
Oh, you loved his sin, the Negro in your dreams.

You had his baby and sent it away,
Crying face to chin or was it the Negro in your dreams?

And now Michael laughs at you,
As blackness is sold threw multimedia din.
The Negro in your Dreams.
