EXHALING GRATEFULNESS
In honesty to the moment, I breathe
in soft autumn air and exhale
gratefulness, knowing
somewhere a mother wails
over the body of her brown-haired boy
crushed by falling rubble.
Another woman in another place opens
wide to love’s embrace. How is it
that I can best sympathize
with the world’s refrain?
In honesty to the moment, exhaling
gratefulness.
