RAY CATES

LUCKY BURN

Cigarettes
I tried them at ten
Expensive at ten
I was ten
The cost then was ten
Cents
For a few cigs
So
I found corn silk
Slick
Newspaper wrapped
I sucked that smoke
Down
Inhaled
In nineteen fifty
I hid and puffed
Cost me nothing
Big old wrap in
Newsprint
Fat puff
Worked fine

Till
I pulled too hard
And flame
Burned
Down
Way down
My throat
Oh
Ouch
Yikes
Wow
The hurt
But I
Never never
Lit one again
Not speaking
Right
For two weeks
Fire makes
Bad habits
Burn out
