Cover Artist Spotlight: Saira Lande

~ By Rachel Baril

Saira Lande, twenty-two, stands at the canvas, brush poised to begin. This is not her first time painting and it is far from her last. The Lecanto CF student comes from a family of artists and is determined to carry on the tradition. She plans to “. . . still be drawing portraits and shooting photos ‘til the day I die”, though with a major in Advertising and Marketing she will turn her talents to graphic design, computer animation, and web design.Already, her fervor to be a lifelong artist is evident. Prints on her walls include inspiring artists such as Andy Warhol, Salvador Dali, and M.C. Escher. Paintings, photos, and drawings – all her own – surround her. Smiling, Saira speaks as she applies paint to canvas.

“I am honored and blessed to have been picked as a featured artist for In the Write Mind. My passion [has always been] capturing someone, whether it is in a photo or on canvas,” Lande says as she creates. As she takes a moment to swirl colors together, her eyes look first to several drawings done in charcoal – her favorite medium – then to a small cross on the wall. She turns back to the canvas with renewed vigor.

So the question of where she gets her inspiration has been answered. Saira’s belief in a higher power is what drives her. When asked to clarify, she responds, “If it wasn’t for Him, I wouldn’t have my eye to spot a good shot, my hand for that perfect brush stroke, or my talent.”

Her gift is the result of years of hard work through taking classes both on and off-campus, and visiting many museums. Such places include both the Ringling School of Art and Design and the famous International Academy of Design. She also enrolled in Fuji training to better understand the chemicals needed to develop her own photos.

When asked how she wishes to be remembered, Saira modestly replies, “Well, my dad remembers all of my works with a smile.”
