APPLIED FLUTE
Course Description/Objectives
The purpose of this course is to provide flutists with an opportunity to perform quality music from various eras of history. Music selected jointly by the instructor and student will be by major composers from both Europe and America. Students will hone their performing skills and, in the process, learn about different styles and techniques of flute writing.
Attendance Policy
Attendance is vital for success in the course. For this reason, only one unexcused absence is allowed during the semester. With each additional unexcused absence, one-half of a letter grade will be deducted from the final average (an A, for example, would become a B+). Students should notify the instructor one day before the lesson if they know they will not be able to attend their lesson the following day.
Course Requirements
Students are expected to attend lessons and practice individually in preparation for lessons. It is recommended that students enrolled in secondary level lessons (MVW 1211 or 2221) practice 30 minutes daily and students enrolled in principal lessons (MVW 1311 or 2321) practice 1 hour daily. Practice rooms may be found in building 4. These are available on a first come/first served basis.
Grading Policy
Grades are determined on the basis of attendance, level of preparation for each lesson, and improvement during the course of the semester. A grade will be given for each lesson based on these criteria, and those grades will be averaged at the end of the semester. In lieu of a final exam, students will perform one composition for other members of the music faculty and other music students at the end of the semester (a “jury”).
Learning Outcomes/Expectations
It is hoped that, upon completion of this course, students will be better acquainted with music written for flute. It is also hoped that students will have refined performing skills and that students will have acquired a solid technical foundation for future music study.
