WOODWIND ENSEMBLE

Course Description/Objectives
The purpose of this course is to provide woodwind players with an opportunity to perform quality music from various eras of history (Renaissance through twentieth century). Music selected will be by major composers from both Europe and America. Students will hone their performing skills and, in the process, learn about different styles and techniques of woodwind writing.

Attendance Policy
Attendance is vital to individual and group/ensemble success. For this reason, only two unexcused absences are allowed during the semester. With each additional unexcused absence, one-half of a letter grade will be deducted from the final average (an A, for example, would become a B+). For excused absences, appropriate written documentation (medical excuse, note from another professor/coach, etc.) must be given to the instructor within one week (not at the end of the semester).

Tardiness
Rehearsal begins promptly at 12:00. Instruments should be assembled by that time. As it distracts both the instructor and other students, tardiness will not be tolerated. Two tardies or incidences of leaving rehearsal early will count as one unexcused absence.

Course Requirements
Students are expected to attend rehearsal and practice individually in preparation for concerts. It is recommended that students devote at least one hour a week to woodwind ensemble music. Practice rooms may be found in building 4. These are available on a first come/first served basis.

Grading Policy
Grades are determined on the basis of attendance. As noted before, after the second unexcused absence, one-half of a letter grade will be deducted from the final average.

Learning Outcomes/Expectations
It is hoped that, upon completion of this course, students will be better acquainted with music written for woodwind ensemble. It is also hoped that students will have refined their individual and ensemble performing skills.
