The reaction begins with the formation of chlorine radicals.  A light initiated process is shown here.  It can also be initiated by high temperatures.

The free radicals then react with the methane in a two step propagation:

This process will ordinarily be repeated a large number of times.  This repetitive process is known as a chain reaction. 

This process will not continue forever because any one of the following termination steps will stop a chain:
