Appleton Celebrates Black Music Month
May 16, 2008
The Appleton Museum of Art of Central Florida Community College welcomes the Singing Trojans of Ribault High School and Alumni Chorus on Thursday, June 5, as part of the museum’s celebration of Black Music Month.
Doors open and food service begins at 5 p.m. with the chorus’ performance beginning at 6 p.m. Admission is $5 for museum members, $10 for nonmembers and free for children 9 and under. Family friendly food and beverages will be provided by Cool Blue Burrito (cash only). The museum’s nonprofit event partners for the evening are Big Brothers/Big Sisters of Mid-Florida and The Sircle.
"This is the first time we’ve done something like this for Black Music Month and we’re really excited about it,” said Museum Director Robin Muse McClea. Black Music Month was established by presidential proclamation in 2002 to highlight the enduring legacy of African-American musicians, singers and composers.
Under the direction of Dr. Eugene White, the Jacksonville-based chorus recently performed at the World of Nations Festival and is preparing to sing at Carnegie Hall in November, the only Florida chorus invited to do so. White has taught music in public schools since 1969 and the 30-member chorus represents the best of his students, past and present.
"This chorus is like a big family reunion; they’ve really bonded together,” he said. “Their voices are so beautiful. I know they can sing; they had to audition for this.”
The Singing Trojans’ June 5 performance at the Appleton is part of a month-long celebration which includes videos and a movie:
- “Treemonisha,” an opera by Scott Joplin, on Sunday, June 1
- “Masters of Tap,” on Sunday, June 8
- “The Autobiography of Miss Jane Pittman,” on Sunday, June 15
- “Porgy and Bess,” Acts I and II on Sunday, June 22, and Act III on Sunday, June 29.
All Sunday videos and films begin at 1:30 p.m. and are free to members or with general admission.
