CFCC Levy Center Hosts Cancer Awareness Program

June 4, 2008

The Central Florida Community College Levy Center hosted a breast cancer awareness program on Monday, June 2. The program, called Shop Talk I, was presented to local beauty salon owners and operators who serve as volunteer hostesses for educational programs.

The program is designed to raise awareness and educate women about the importance of early detection through breast self-examination, mammograms and medical check ups.

Peg Iwata, a volunteer educator with the American Cancer Society, discussed “Breast Cancer: Reduce Your Risk.” Gail Osteen, Advanced Registered Nurse Practitioner, discussed “Breast Self-Awareness;” and Carol Lavin, ARNP with the Levy County Health Department, talked about the “Believe in Miracles” program.

The program was made possible through the generous support of The Ocala Royal Dames for Cancer Research, a nonprofit organization that supports educational programs and activities that promote, enhance and further cancer research and education. For more information about the Levy Center, visit the center at 114 Rodgers Blvd. in Chiefland or call 352-493-9533.
