Appleton Museum Family Day Celebrates African Culture

~April 8, 2008

The Appleton Museum of Art’s annual Family Day will be a celebration of African culture with live entertainment, storytelling, videos and an array of hands-on activities for children of all ages.

“Out of Africa” takes place Saturday, April 19, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Appleton Museum of Art of Central Florida Community College, 4333 E. Silver Springs Blvd., Ocala. Admission is free for children 9 and under, $3 for ages 10-18, $4 for seniors and $6 for adults. Family-friendly meals will also be available for a nominal charge.

Highlights include performances by the Kuumba Dancers and Drummers, a Tampa-based troupe specializing in storytelling through traditional African folk dance and music. There will also be face-painting, family videos, and numerous arts and crafts projects led by Marion County educators. Families may also go on cultural “safari,” searching through the Appleton’s permanent collections galleries for clues to African-related art and artifacts.

The following is the schedule of events:

  • Make-it-take-it arts and crafts, 10 a.m.-3 p.m. (African fans, beaded dragonflies, African drums, printmaking, Maasai shields, African elephants and coloring table)
  • African Art Cart, 10:15 a.m. and 2 p.m.
  • Face painting, 10 a.m.-3 p.m.
  • Family videos, showing throughout the day except during Kuumba Dancers performances (“Anansi,” “Understanding African Art,” “The Art of the Dogon” and “Muffaro's Beautiful Daughters”)
  • Kuumba Dancers and Drummers with Storyteller, 11 a.m. and 1 p.m.

“Family Day: Out of Africa” is sponsored by the Appleton’s Community Partner, Ocala.com.
