Appleton Has Full Slate in January, Including Anniversary Gala

The exhibitions “Katharine Hepburn: Dressed for Stage and Screen,” “Scenes from the South: American Art from the Collection of James Fuller” and “For the Love of the Sea: Watercolors of Philip Steel” are showcased in January at the Appleton Museum of Art, College of Central Florida. Other highlights include a performance of the Ocala Symphony Orchestra’s SoundArt Music Series on Jan. 8 and the Appleton’s 25th Anniversary Gala “La Belle Epoque” on Jan. 28.
Daily admission to the Appleton Museum is $6 for adults; $4 for seniors 55 or better and students 19 and over; $3 for youths ages 10-18; and free for members, CF students, children age 9 and under, and active military personnel and their immediate families.
On Sunday, Jan. 8, the Ocala Symphony Orchestra’s SoundArt Music Series presents “Fabulous Flute Flare” at 3 p.m. Under the direction of Dr. Kristen Stoner, principal flutist, the program presents many types and sounds of flutes featured in works by composers such as Monteverdi, Mozart and Debussy. Tickets are $15 per person, include a pre-concert guided tour of the museum, and are available at the Appleton or by contacting the Ocala Symphony Orchestra at 352-351-1606 or www.ocalasymphony.com.
Exhibitions in January include “Scenes from the South: American Art from the Collection of James Fuller” through Jan. 15 with landscapes of the Southern U.S. painted by some of the country’s finest artists. The museum also presents “Katharine Hepburn: Dressed for Stage and Screen” until Jan. 22 with more than 40 costumes and fashions that the screen legend wore in films, on stage and television during her six-decade career. Opening on Jan. 21 is “For the Love of the Sea: Watercolors of Philip Steel” exhibiting 35 original paintings produced by this award-winning New England artist whose nautical-themed works reflect his knowledge of the sea and deep respect for those who make a living from the ocean.

The Appleton Museum of Art showcases a permanent collection of European, American and contemporary art, plus Asian, African, Islamic and pre-Columbian artifacts and antiquities. The Appleton Museum is open 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesdays through Saturdays, noon to 5 p.m. Sundays and closed on Mondays, Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Year’s Day. A 12-month membership is available for $25 for seniors 55 and over, $30 for adults 18 and over, $40 for two seniors over age 55, $50 for a family of two adults and any children under age 18, and $15 for all college students and current or retired educators.
