'Canstruction Ocala 2014' at Appleton Museum of Art
Dec. 18, 2014
A creative design-and-build competition in which artists and community groups construct fantastic giant-size structures made entirely out of canned foods will be held at the Appleton Museum of Art, College of Central Florida, in February.
The creations of the eight teams competing in “Canstruction Ocala 2014” will be on display at the museum Feb. 22 through March 9. A preview party and awards presentation will be held Friday, Feb. 21, from 6-8 p.m. Tickets are $40 per person and can be purchased at www.AppletonMuseum.org, or by calling the museum at 352-291-4455, ext. 1834. The party, which is co-hosted by CF District Board of Trustees’ Cory Pool and Priya Ghumman, includes hors d’oeuvres by Chef Sharon and music by the CF Woodwind Ensemble.
After feeding the imagination of museum visitors, the can sculptures will be dismantled and used to feed the community through three regional food banks – Brother’s Keepers, Daystar Life Center and Tri-County Outreach.
Proceeds from the event will support the museum’s exhibit and education programs.
Daily admission to the Appleton Museum is $6 for adults; $4 for seniors 55 or better and students 19 and over; $3 for youths ages 10-18; and free for members, CF students, children age 9 and under, and active military personnel and their immediate families.
In addition, the Appleton Museum of Art offers a permanent collection of European, American and Contemporary art, plus Asian, African, Islamic and pre-Columbian artifacts and antiquities. The museum is open 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesdays through Saturdays, noon to 5 p.m. Sundays and closed on Mondays, Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Year’s Day. A 12-month membership is available for $25 for seniors 55 and over, $30 for adults 18 and over, $40 for two seniors over age 55, $50 for a family of two adults and any children under age 18, and $15 for all college students and current or retired educators.
