Appleton Polo Cup Advance Ticket Sales End Friday
Oct. 6, 2008
It’s not too late to snag VIP tickets to the Appleton Cup Invitational polo tournament, set to take place Oct. 18 at the Florida Horse Park. Discounted tickets remain on sale through Friday, Oct. 10.
The Appleton Cup is hosted by the Florida Thorobred Fillies in honor of the late Arthur I. Appleton, who passed away in January at 92. Appleton, owner of Bridlewood Farm, was a respected leader in the Florida thoroughbred horse industry and founder of the Appleton Museum of Art. Proceeds raised will benefit the museum and horse park as well as the Fillies’ charitable endeavors.
During the Appleton Cup, two teams – the Winning Edge Tack Shop of Ocala and Oakdale Polo and Equestrian Center of Sumterville – will play two four-chukker matches with each chukker, or period, lasting seven minutes. Players for the Winning Edge will be Wendy Barquin, Stacey Stover, Ed McNamara and Patrick McNamara; Max Stevens, Stuart Campbell, Harrison Wise and Kelly Beck will play for Oakdale. The featured and cup matches will be announced by José “Cuko” Escapite.
Event chairwoman Beth Rose of the Fillies said you don’t have to be a polo fan to enjoy the festivities, which include a carriage parade, traditional divot stomp, ladies’ hat judging contest, tailgate space competition, and silent and live auctions.
A highlight of the Appleton Cup will be the presentation of the Fillies’ Arthur I. Appleton Visionary Leadership Award recognizing the individual, couple or family best following in Appleton’s footsteps and personifying philanthropic generosity.
VIP tickets are $60 per person if purchased by Friday, Oct. 10. VIP admission, which may also be purchased at the gate for $75, includes a reception with the polo players, access to the VIP tent and catering stations, cash bar as well as the auctions and award presentation. A limited number of tailgating spots are available for $125 and include four regular admissions to the event.
Through charitable events such as the Appleton Cup, the Florida Thorobred Fillies have helped raise funds for more than 40 area nonprofits. The Appleton Museum of Art, 4333 E. Silver Springs Blvd., Ocala, is owned and operated by CFCC and home to some of the finest permanent collections and changing exhibitions the southeast has to offer.
