Nearly 40 pieces of artwork created by area high school students will be exhibited in the Sixth District Congressional Art Competition opening on Saturday, April 28, at the Appleton Museum of Art, College of Central Florida. An award ceremony and reception for the artists and their families will be presented from 1 to 2 p.m.

The Sixth District Congressional Art Competition is coordinated through the office of Congressman Cliff Stearns and is part of a national high school art competition. The winning piece will be displayed in the nation’s Capitol for one year along with first-place entries from other districts around the country.
Guests who visit the Appleton to view the student art will also enjoy the museum’s current exhibition, “Art and the Animal.” On display through June 17, this exhibit features nearly 70 works of art in various media that depict wild and domestic animals in motion and at rest. The pieces were created by members of the Society of Animal Artists, an international organization comprised of more than 500 members from six continents.
In addition, the Appleton offers a permanent collection of European, American and contemporary art, plus Asian, African, Islamic and pre-Columbian artifacts and antiquities. The museum is open 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesdays through Saturdays, noon to 5 p.m. Sundays and closed on Mondays, Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Year’s Day.
