Citrus Campus to Host African-American Read-In

Feb. 5, 2010

Central Florida Community College Citrus Campus will host a celebration of literature by African-American authors with a read-in on Sunday, Feb. 21.

The observance of the National African American Read-In will be held from 2 to 4 p.m. in the Citrus Learning and Conference Center, 3800 S. Lecanto Highway, and will feature several volunteer readers from the community. The celebration was previously held at the Courthouse Heritage Museum in Inverness.

School principals as well as students, local elected officials and private citizens, actors and singers, editors and executives will gather to emphasize the importance of reading and literacy, according to Karen Slaska with Citrus County Libraries. Ranging from speeches to spirituals, hip-hop to oral history, picture books to poetry to prayer, short selections will be read aloud allowing listeners to enter the fascinating world of ideas and images conveyed through the written word.

Master of Ceremonies Teretta Charles will introduce the readings through brief profiles of the authors. These authors range from those famous for their writings such as Langston Hughes and Gwendolyn Brooks, to those better known for their professional lives such as Dr. Ben Carson and children's advocate Marian Wright Edelman. Local vocal artist Crystal Wilson will also perform.

The idea for an African-American Read-In was introduced by the Black Caucus of the National Council of Teachers of English 21 years ago. Since 2000, more than a million readers of all ethnic groups have participated. Local sponsors include the Educational Partners in Citrus County with representatives from the Historical Society, CFCC Institute for Community Advancement, Citrus County Schools and the Citrus County Library System along with financial support from the Citrus County Chronicle and other local and national businesses.

The program is free and refreshments will be provided. For more information, contact Edith Ramlow at 352-746-6721, ext. 6120.
