Sept. 11, 2012

The College of Central Florida International Film Series will present “Amreeka,” an immigrant drama about a divorced Palestinian woman and her son who move to Illinois.

The film will be shown on Tuesday, Sept. 18, at 2 p.m. at the Appleton Museum of Art, College of Central Florida, 4333 E. Silver Springs Blvd., and at 7 p.m. at the CF Ocala Campus in Building 8, Room 110, 3001 S.W. College Road.

At the Appleton, viewers pay museum admission unless they are a museum member or a patron of the CF International Film Series. Series membership is $15 for individuals, $25 for dual membership and includes a bonus film each year. For information about membership, call 352-873-5808. The viewing is free at CF.

Released in 2009, “Amreeka” shows the challenges of post-9/11 America for the immigrant mother and son. Once a banker in Palestine, the indomitable, genial woman is lucky to find a job at White Castle. Meanwhile, her son struggles to find balance between fitting in at school and not suppressing his cultural identity.

The 96-minute film is rated PG-13 for brief drug use involving teens, and some language. It is the debut film of writer-director Cherien Dabis.
