Appleton to Host 'Great Walks' Talk
April 28, 2008
If you’re itching to experience the Sunshine State but don’t know where to start, let Lucy Beebe Tobias’ “50 Great Walks in Florida” be your guide.
Tobias, the Authentic Florida expert for Visit Florida, will detail some of her favorite strolls and autograph copies of her 352-page book on Sunday, May 4, at 2:45 p.m. at the Appleton Museum of Art of Central Florida Community College.
Now retired, Tobias is an award-winning reporter, environmental writer and photographer for the New York Times newspapers in Florida. “Great Walks in Florida” evolved from her popular “Great Walks with Lucy” features in the Star-Banner.
Writing with humor and enthusiasm, Tobias identifies a “Great Walk” as a “short but significant jaunt when you learn new things, get some exercise and are done in time for lunch.”
Her book, recently published by the University Press of Florida, divides the state into five sections and offers walks showcasing botanical gardens, beaches, wetlands or lakes, areas of historical significance and nature trails.
Holly Ambrose, author of “30 Eco Trips in Florida,” said that “reading this book is almost like having your personal guide to Florida characters and history.”
Copies of “50 Great Walks” will be available for purchase at the Appleton Museum’s gift shop.
The Appleton Museum of Art is owned and operated by Central Florida Community College.
General admission is $6. For information, call the museum at 352-291-4455, ext. 1835, or visit www.appletonmuseum.org.
