CFCC Students to Unveil Literary, Art Magazine

~April 8, 2008

Students will read their contributions when the Central Florida Community College literary magazine “Imprints” is unveiled on Monday, April 21.

The annual event begins at 1 p.m. at the Webber Center of the Ocala Campus, 3001 S.W. College Road. The reading is open to the public. Visitors will also enjoy refreshments, jazz and complimentary copies of “Imprints.” In addition, guests can tour the Webber Gallery’s exhibit of student artwork that includes many pieces featured in the 2008 issue of “Imprints.”

The 2008 edition contains the art of 16 students and writing of 18 more enrolled at the Ocala Campus during the past academic year, according to Dr. Cassandra Robison, “Imprints” faculty advisor. Most of the writing is produced in CFCC’s two Creative Writing classes.

“I was honored to guide the 2008 staff to an outstanding issue of ‘Imprints,’” Robison said. “Student Editor Tricia Windowmaker was an extraordinary leader with a vision for excellence, the organization skills to work on a tight timeline, and the leadership to command her staff with aplomb.”

The theme of this edition is realism, with art and poetry working synchronistically throughout to evoke aspects of realism. Windowmaker said that she chose the theme because “art demands truth.” She quoted poet Walt Whitman who once said: “Whatever satisfies the soul is truth.”

Robison praised CFCC Assistant Professor of Art Verne Ayers for his ever enthusiastic support of “Imprints” and his willingness to photograph and share student artwork from his courses. “Ayers’ appreciation of ‘Imprints’ has created a true alliance here at CFCC Ocala between the fine arts and the literary arts,” Robison said.

“Imprints” was first published in the early 1990s and has earned hundreds of awards throughout the years. The 2007 edition won Best in State for General Excellence along with 10 other major awards at the Florida Community College Press Association convention. In addition, Peggy Aiello, from the 2006-2007 staff, won the Debra Vazquez Memorial Award for Excellence in Poetry.
