CFCC Receives $70,000 Grant for Senior Programs
May 1, 2008
Central Florida Community College is one of five colleges selected nationwide to become a mentor college in the Plus 50 Initiative. CFCC will receive $70,000 over three years to expand its offerings and develop new programs for the community’s senior population.
“CFCC was selected because we are one of the premier programs in the country already providing programs and services to seniors,” said Jerone Gamble, executive manager of Continuing Education at CFCC. “Also, the college is advancing the notion that there is a need for more public and private funding in order to develop programs to meet the needs of the growing baby boomer population. CFCC is way ahead of most colleges in the country.”
The grant will allow CFCC’s Pathways to Living, Learning and Serving program to develop new course offerings that will lead to employment opportunities for Plus 50 students, including online business classes, individual and corporate tax preparation courses, customer service technology, medical transcription, and intergenerational computer courses.
The grant will also allow CFCC to revise the curriculum for the Senior Institute, which provides intellectually stimulating courses for students 50 and better; provide support for initiatives such as the Senior Fun Fest, scheduled for May 23 at the Ocala Campus; and support the college’s boomer initiative, which will provide meaningful volunteer opportunities for the growing baby boomer population.
The Plus 50 Initiative is sponsored by the American Association of Community Colleges and is part of a $3.2 million grant from the Atlantic Philanthropies. As a mentor college, CFCC will provide guidance to two of 10 colleges that received demonstration grants. Santa Fe Community College is one of the 10 and the only other college selected from Florida.
Community colleges are ideally suited to help baby boomers determine how to make their bonus years productive and fulfilling, according to the AACC. The institutions have long catered to the needs of nontraditional students, with 16 percent of the community college population over age 40.
