Vazquez Memorial Poetry Series Brings Brian Turner to Ocala

The College of Central Florida will host award-winning poet and U.S. Army veteran Brian Turner Feb. 6 and 7 at its Ocala Campus, 3001 S.W. College Road.
Turner will read his poetry collection “Here, Bullet,” Thursday, Feb. 6, at 7 p.m. in the Dassance Fine Arts Center and Friday, Feb. 7, at noon in Building 8, Room 110.
“Here, Bullet,” which chronicles Turner’s service as an infantry team leader in Iraq, is a New York Times “Editor’s Choice” selection and has won numerous awards, including the 2005 Beatrice Hawley Award and the 2007 Poets Prize.
An English professor at Sierra Nevada College, Turner has been featured on National Public Radio, the Newshour with Jim Lehrer, and the BBC. The 2009-2010 Amy Lowell Traveling Poetry Scholar, he has received a USA Hillcrest Fellowship, a NEA Fellowship, and a Lannan Literary Fellowship.
His visit is part of the Debra Vazquez Poetry Series that honors CF English and creative writing professor Debra Vazquez who died as a result of domestic violence in 2004. For more information, contact CF Communications Chair Sandra Cooper at 352-854-2322, ext. 1361.
