CFCC Reminds Students of Deadline to Apply for Bright Futures Scholarships

~April 1, 2008

Central Florida Community College reminds high school seniors to apply for Florida Department of Education Bright Futures Scholarship Funds, which will pay up to 100 percent of tuition for eligible students.

Seniors must apply before their graduation date in order to be considered for the scholarships. The Medallion Scholars Award is one of four awards that make up the Bright Futures Scholarship program and is especially beneficial to students attending community college. The award will pay 75 percent of tuition if a student attends a Florida university, but pays 100 percent tuition for students seeking an associate degree at a community college.

High school students are eligible for the award if they have a 3.0 weighted GPA, and a 970 composite score on the SAT Reasoning Test or 20 composite score on the ACT. The new writing sections of the tests are not required for eligibility. Complete requirements and application information can be found at the Florida Department of Education Web site: http://www.floridastudentfinancialaid.org/ssfad/home/uamain.htm.

Bright Futures funding is disbursed for fall and spring semesters. Funds are not available for summer awards or for remedial coursework. Full tuition is paid for credit courses only and up to $300 paid toward laboratory fees each fall and spring semester.

The Florida Lottery funds this program, which was created by the Florida Legislature in 1997.
