STEPS Scholarship Recipients to be Honored

Oct. 7, 2008

The Central Florida Community College Foundation will recognize recipients of STEPS — Scholarships Taking Elementary Promising Students to CFCC — at an ice cream social on Thursday, Oct. 9.

More than 150 students, parents, school district and college representatives are expected to attend the event, which honors fifth-graders from elementary schools in Marion, Citrus and Levy counties.

The STEPS program began in 2005 when a member of the CFCC District Board of Trustees proposed an endowed scholarship program for promising and financially deserving students to strive for a college education. The plan is to provide a scholarship for a boy and girl at every elementary school in the college’s three-county service area, a total of 96 scholarships.

Since the program began in 2005, 66 students have been recognized; 34 students from 28 schools were presented certificates at end-of-year celebrations in June.

The scholarships are funded through the donations of community sponsors. A $10,000 donor gift is eligible for state matching funds and the $20,000 total is invested to generate the annual scholarship award.

One of the most rewarding aspects of the program is the connection that is forged between the donors and recipients, according to Joan Stearns, CFCC executive director for College and Community Relations. “One of our community donors funded four additional scholarships after attending an award ceremony at Oakcrest Elementary School in June.”
