Appleton Museum Showcases Top Student Artists
April 29, 2008
The annual “Young in Art” and “Sixth District Congressional Art Competition” exhibitions open Saturday, May 10, at the Appleton Museum of Art of Central Florida Community College.
“Young in Art” features juried art from 24 Marion County elementary, middle and high schools while the “Congressional Art Competition” showcases top works by high school students in Florida’s eight-county 6th Congressional District. The dual exhibits will be on display at the Appleton through May 25.
Winners in the “Congressional Art Competition” will be announced May 10 at an awards ceremony and reception for students and their families hosted by the Appleton. The winning artist will also be invited to a reception in Washington, D.C., and their artwork will be displayed in the nation’s Capitol for one year along with winning art from all other congressional districts. In addition, the first-place student artist will receive a $12,000 scholarship to the Savannah School of Art and Design.
Last year’s top congressional district prize went to Brooke Blasser of St. John’s Country Day School in Orange Park. Sophia Santivenez of West Port High School in Ocala won second place and Heather Foster of Vanguard High School, also in Ocala, took home third place.
In a statement released by his office, U.S. Rep. Cliff Stearns (R-Ocala) said he is proud to sponsor the annual competition.
“Through art we learn to express ourselves and to understand and appreciate the revelations of others,” said Stearns who has represented the district since 1989. “I appreciate the strong artistic talent we have in the 6th District, and I thank all the participants for sharing their works with us.”
Pieces in the “Young in Art” exhibition were selected from artwork previously displayed at the Paddock Mall. “Young in Art” exhibitors will also be recognized on May 10 with certificates of participation.
