Student Publications Earn Top Honors

Central Florida Community College’s student newspaper, the Patriot Press, and the literary magazine for the Ocala Campus, Imprints, each captured first place and accumulated more points than any other college at the Florida Community College Press Association state convention, which was held Oct. 21-23 at the Ocala Hilton.

The event culminated with the FCCPA awards banquet, which honored the top students in newspaper and literary magazines.

The Patriot Press totaled 29 points, including finishing in first place in eight categories, to edge out Daytona State College with 28 points. Imprints’ 24 points included four first-place showings to top runner-up State College of Florida, Manatee-Sarasota with 15 points. Imprints has won its division four years in a row.

The Patriot Press and Imprints competed in Division A for smaller colleges and still racked up more points than any school in Division B, larger colleges.

This is the first time under current CFCC faculty advisers Rob Marino, for Patriot Press, and Dr. Cassandra Robison, for Imprints, that the publications finished in first place in the same year.

"Cassandra and I are obviously incredibly delighted, but this is a direct result of having extremely talented and dedicated students on our staffs,” said Marino, who is also the current FCCPA president. “Our students are the ones most responsible for making the Patriot Press and Imprints into award-winning publications. They deserve the accolades most.”

Five CFCC students earned an Inner Circle Award for placing in three separate categories, including Peggy Aiello, Melissa Bussinger, Shannon Hackbarth and Kathleen Hamilton for Imprints and Christopher Spata for the Patriot Press.

CFCC’s Citrus Campus literary magazine, In The Write Mind, earned honorable mention distinction.
