CFCC Recognizes Volunteers
April 30, 2008
In celebration of National Volunteer Week, April 27 through May 3, Central Florida Community College would like to recognize the students, faculty and staff who have shared their time and energy to make our community a better place
Each year, hundreds of CFCC family members contribute thousands of hours on dozens of projects. CFCC was recognized for its volunteer efforts in October 2007 when Florida Campus Compact named it one of two finalists in the state for campus engagement by a community college.
“Our state has seen tremendous benefits from many campuses that have made intentional investments in their surroundings by connecting student learning to community service and civic engagement,” said DeeDee Rasmussen, executive director of Florida Campus Compact. “We couldn’t be more proud of all of them, but CFCC really deserves the recognition they’ve achieved in this area.”
For nine years, the college has celebrated the United Way’s Day of Caring at Evangeline Booth Garden Apartments, bringing volunteer efforts and fellowship to the residents of the apartment complex managed by the Salvation Army. “More than 1,000 students and employees in the CFCC family have participated in activities there,” said Pat Fleming, professor at CFCC.
For six years, CFCC volunteers have celebrated Thanksgiving with Evangeline Booth residents. “The project has served more than 500 meals, contributed more than $1,500, and generated countless smiles for the residents,” Fleming said.
Students, faculty and staff collaborate to support organizations such as March of Dimes, Leukemia and Lymphoma Society, American Heart Association, United Way, Habitat for Humanity, and many more. CFCC’s student athletes, club members and other organized groups routinely give their time with reading programs, coaching activities, blood drives and campus events.
The Retired and Senior Volunteer Program, sponsored locally through CFCC, recorded 155,544 hours of service by 1,045 volunteers in 2007. Several of the volunteers were honored in April for giving 5, 10, 15 and 20 years of service to the program. Volunteer Else Hoffman was honored for 25 years of service, only the second Marion County RSVP participant to receive the honor.
