Dr. Michael Jamieson
Mathematics Department
Programming Facilitator
I support the recommendations of the American Mathematical Association of
Two-Year Colleges (AMATYC) for teaching mathematics.
- We should use technology to open the door for interesting applications
of mathematics.
- We should update our curriculum so we are not teaching outdated
skills.
- In large part, students must take responsibility for what
they learn. They receive support from others, including
their instructors, advsors, tutors, and so on.
- Students create a better understanding of subject matter when
they interact with each other. Group work is an excellent learning tool.
Of course, testing is done individually - sorry :-(
I believe that when instructors hold students to a high standard, students
tend to rise to the expectation. I love finding ways to help students step
up their game. A good class is a good workout.
