DESCRIPTION:As 13 of Britain’s colonies declared independence in 1776\, the empire’s Florida colonies\, East Florida and West Florida\, remained loyal to King George. Eyed by American and Spanish forces alike\, the Floridas were soon engulfed in war. This lecture tells the often-overlooked story of Florida in the War of Independence.  \nJoin us in the Stearns Learning Resources Center on Monday\, Oct. 19\, at 12:30 p.m. for the 2026 Stearns Speaker Series presentation\, “Britain’s Loyal Colonies Lost: The American Revolution in Florida.” Presented by David Head\, author and senior lecturer of history at the University of Central Florida\, this discussion will focus on Florida’s unique history with the American Revolution. A native of Western New York\, he received his Ph.D. in history from the University at Buffalo. Dr. Head has published five books\, including A Crisis of Peace: George Washington\, the Newburgh Conspiracy\, and the Fate of the American Revolution\, which was a finalist for the 2020 George Washington Book Prize. His most recent book is A Republic of Scoundrels: The Schemers\, Intriguers\, and Adventurers Who Created a New American Nation.
