In response\, the filmmaker suggested that the series show the entire trilogy and graciously granted the necessary permissions and films to do so. \nIn Long Flat Balls\, the first film in the trilogy\, the Norwegian working-class heroes of EdGarasjen empty their bank accounts to travel to the World Cup soccer championship in Germany in hopes of saving the garage (and their jobs) from bankruptcy. \nFor a full series list and more information on the Ira Holmes International Film Series\, contact Wendy Adams at 352-873-5800\, ext. 1546\, or visit www.CF.edu/filmseries.

SUMMARY:“Pather Panchali" Appleton Screening
DESCRIPTION:The College of Central Florida’s Ira Holmes International Film Series is excited to present this year’s season of films. \nAll films will be shown Tuesdays at 2 p.m. at the Appleton Museum of Art\, 4333 E. Films may contain mature content. \nAbout the Film\n“Pather Panchali”(NR\, India\, 1955\, 125 min.) \nWith the release in 1955 of Satyajit Ray’s debut\, Pather Panchali\, an eloquent and important new cinematic voice made itself heard all over the world. A depiction of rural Bengali life in a style inspired by Italian neorealism\, this naturalistic but poetic evocation of a number of years in the life of a family introduces us to both little Apu and\, just as essentially\, the women who will help shape him: his independent older sister\, Durga; his harried mother\, Sarbajaya\, who\, with her husband away\, must hold the family together; and his kindly and mischievous elderly “auntie\,” Indir—vivid\, multifaceted characters all. With resplendent photography informed by its young protagonist’s perpetual sense of discovery\, Pather Panchali\, which won an award for Best Human Document at Cannes\, is an immersive cinematic experience and a film of elemental power. \nFor a full series list and more information on the Ira Holmes International Film Series\, contact Wendy Adams at 352-873-5800\, ext. 1546\, or visit www.CF.edu/filmseries.

The film is set on a distant planet called Ygam\, where enslaved humans (Oms) are the playthings of giant blue native inhabitants (Draags). After Terr\, kept as a pet since infancy\, escapes from his gigantic child captor\, he is swept up by a band of radical fellow Oms who are resisting the Draags’ oppression and violence. With its eerie\, coolly surreal cutout animation by Roland Topor; brilliant psychedelic jazz score by Alain Goraguer; and wondrous creatures and landscapes\, this Cannes-awarded 1973 counterculture classic is a perennially compelling statement against conformity and violence. \nAttend this showing in a Sci-Fi inspired Halloween costume and be ettered to win a prize. Refreshments and giveaways provided by the CF Student Activities Board. \nFor a full series list and more information on the Ira Holmes International Film Series\, contact Wendy Adams at 352-873-5800\, ext. 1546\, or visit www.CF.edu/filmseries. \n

When an uncommonly long drought threatens everything they know\, Virginio and Sisa must decide whether to stay and maintain their traditional way of life or admit defeat and move in with family members in the city. Their dilemma is precipitated by the arrival of their grandson Clever\, who comes to visit with news. The three of them must face\, each in their own way\, the effects of a changing environment\, the importance of tradition\, and the meaning of life itself. This visually jaw-dropping debut feature by photographer-turned-filmmaker Alejandro Loayza Grisi is lensed by award-winning cinematographer Barbara Alvarez (Lucrecia Martel’s The Headless Woman) and won the Grand Jury Prize (World Cinema Dramatic) at the Sundance Film Festival. \nFor a full series list and more information on the Ira Holmes International Film Series\, contact Wendy Adams at 352-873-5800\, ext. 1546\, or visit www.CF.edu/filmseries.

After being removed from the traveling circus\, which is the only life he’s ever known\, EO begins a trek across the Polish and Italian countryside\, experiencing cruelty and kindness in equal measure\, all the while observing the follies and triumphs of humankind.EO begins a trek across the Polish and Italian countryside\, experiencing cruelty and kindness in equal measure\, all the while observing the follies and triumphs of humankind. During his travels\, EO is both helped and hindered by a cast of characters including a young Italian priest (Lorenzo Zurzolo)\, a Countess (Isabelle Huppert)\, and a rowdy Polish soccer team. Loosely inspired by Robert Bresson’s Au hasard Balthazar\, and featuring immersive\, stunning cinematography by Michal Dymek coupled with Pawel Mykietyn’s resonant score\, Skolimowski’s film puts the viewer in the perspective of its four-legged protagonist. EO’s journey speaks to the world around us\, an equine hero boldly pointing out societal ills\, and serving as warning to the dangers of neglect and inaction\, all while on a quest for freedom. \nFor a full series list and more information on the Ira Holmes International Film Series\, contact Wendy Adams at 352-873-5800\, ext. 1546\, or visit www.CF.edu/filmseries.
