CF Student Newspaper Named Best In State

College of Central Florida student publications and contributors brought home numerous awards from Florida College System Publications Association State Awards Banquet in Tampa, Oct. 18.

Patriot Press, the student newspaper, placed first overall in Division A, which includes colleges with fewer than 6,500 full-time students. This is the second first place win for the paper and sixth consecutive top two finish.

“Our students have a great sense of ownership of the Patriot Press, making it one of the best papers in the nation,” said Rob Marino, Patriot Press faculty advisor. “Finishing first in eight categories is a true testament to the incredible diversity and versatility we have on staff.”

Awards for the Patriot Press were presented to former co-editor-in-chief Christian Lemire, Inner Circle Award for placing in three or more individual categories, first place in arts review,  and second in both general column and design. Heather Reinblatt received the Inner Circle Award, first place in both news story and editorial, second in design. Omar Diaz received second in sports photo, third in sports writing; Brandon LaBelle, second in picture story; Charlotte Harrigan, first in illustration, third in ad design; Edward Barnes, first for in-depth reporting; Nick Wisby, first in sports column; Danielle Veenstra, second in feature photo, third in comic strip; Marcos Colon, second in humor writing; spring 2013 CF graduate and co-editor-in-chief Abbie Banitt, first place in news photo, second in design; summer 2013 CF graduate Nicole Gomez, first in feature story.

Contributors to “Imprints,” the student literary and art magazine at the Ocala Campus, also received awards. Jessyca Thibault, won second place in best poem, and Sandra Brower and Ashley Kinney won third in best two-page spread.

Babette Van Story, a contributor to “In the Write Mind,” the Citrus Campus student literary and art magazine, won third place for best photo. Daniel Duvall won third place for nonfiction and essay.
