'In Another Life' Exhibit Opens at CF Webber Gallery July 18

June 18, 2013

The College of Central Florida will open the exhibit “In Another Life” Thursday, July 18, at the Webber Center Gallery, Ocala Campus, 3001 S.W. College Road.

Curated by CF instructor Charlie Cummings, this unique exhibit features sculptures by artists who repurpose objects from daily life as raw material for creating their artwork. More than just recycling, these artists use the ideas associated with the repurposed object’s original form or function as a foundation for conveying meaning in their art.

“We spend our time surrounded by manmade objects that become background noise to our daily lives,” said Cummings. “Upon thoughtful examination we can find a wealth of social meaning and history in any given item. The artworks in ‘In Another Life’ harness the innate concepts associated with everyday items and bring them to our attention by presenting them as sculptures.”

Also featured in the exhibit are works by Bryce Alsten, Giuliano Geronymo, Samantha Greek, Juan Griego, Meagan Gumpert, Giang Lien Pham, Josh Price, Ian F. Thomas and Jonathan Whitfill. The artists work in a variety of media including sculpture and installation.

In his artist’s statement, Whitfill speaks of the meaning behind his sculptures. “Constructed from discarded encyclopedias, dictionaries, and paperback novels, these formal found object sculptures pay homage to a rapidly diminishing delivery item of knowledge while stimulating concepts of longevity and beauty albeit in an altered state.”

There is no fee to visit the exhibit or a reception that will be held Thursday, Aug. 29, from 4:30-6:30 p.m. The exhibit continues through Sept. 7. Please note that the new gallery hours of operation are Monday through Friday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. For more information call 352-873-5809.
