It's your first semester in college and you want to make the most of it. What can you do to Start Smart @ CF?
Know when your registration window is open and register then.Students who register prior to the first day of class are 11 percent more likely to pass the class.
When you have your first advisement session, make sure you take notes and ask questions. Learn your advisor’s name and contact information and share with them any concerns you have about reaching your educational goals. Your advisor can connect you with valuable resources that you may need to be successful.
It may sound obvious but attending class, whether for an in-person lecture or logging in online to complete coursework, is a key element in your ability to be successful in that class. Check your syllabus. Many courses even have an attendance policy that can bring your grade down if you are not there.
Start Full Time
Research shows that students who attend school full time are more than twice as likely as their peers who attend part time. Ask your advisor for help in comparing your academic path in a full-time versus a part-time format.
Get to know someone in every class. Exchange contact information so that you can help each other succeed. Join a club or academic special interest group and get involved. Meet with your instructor during an office hour for help. Studies prove that the more engaged in your college experience you are, the more you interact with peers and faculty, the more likely you are to learn, to be successful in your classes and to complete your educational goals!
