A Focus on the Literary Arts at CF Ocala:

Literature: In addition to the literature rich ENC 1102, various courses in literature are available to students, including American Literature I & II, British Literature I & II, Children’s Literature, and World Literature. Honors sections are available in American and British Literature, with American Literature I offered online in Summer C. Literature courses at CF are student-centered courses, featuring Socratic seminar, group discussions, individual projects, as well as other active learning techniques.  For further information, contact Professor Joe Zimmerman, 4-202 D, X 1233; Professor Sandra Cooper, 2-221 D, X 1361; or Professor Cassandra Robison, 4-202 B, X 1492.

Creative Writing: The Communications Department offers two courses in creative writing, CRW 2001 and CRW 2002.  CRW 2001 is an introduction to creative writing offered each fall while CRW 2002 is an advanced course in creative writing offered each spring that may be taken three times for a total of 9 elective hours.  Both courses offer student-centered workshops in poetry and prose where students create their own display portfolios.  If students are interested, elective credit hours are available for working as part of the student staff on IMPRINTS, CF Ocala’s award-winning student literary & art magazine (see information below).  For further information regarding creative writing options, students may contact Dr. Cassandra Robison, 4 – 202 B, X 1492.

Imprints: An Award-Winning Student Literary & Art Magazine.  For fifteen years, the Communications Department has published an annual literary magazine called Imprints.  The magazine has garnered state and national awards every year. In 2007, Imprints won Best in State for General Excellence, among other outstanding awards.  A student-run publication, Imprints is created by CF students interested in the creative arts and graphics design. Independent study credit is available to staff members. Further information regarding Imprints is available from Dr. Cassandra Robison, 4- 202 B, X 1492.

The Debra Vazquez Memorial Poetry Series was created by faculty and staff to honor the memory of English professor Debra Vazquez who taught English, literature, and creative writing at CF for many years. Professor Vazquez established Imprints, the student literary magazine, as one of the best in the state and served as its faculty advisor until 2004. Every year, CF brings writers of literary stature to the Ocala campus for free performances for faculty, staff, and the surrounding community.   Since 2004, the series has welcomed United States Poet Laureate Ted Kooser, Li Young Li, Kay Ryan, and Marilyn Taylor. The Debra Vazquez Memorial Poetry Series has been a creative and energetic force that has engendered collaboration between faculty, facilitated interactions with our students, and connected us to artists and colleagues in the community and across the country. For further information regarding the poetry series, contact Communications Chair Eric Warner, 4-202C, X 1594.
