A semi-native Floridian, Ms. Wirt came to Citrus County from the Washington D.C. area in 1963. She received her MFA from the University of Florida in 1989, and has done recent post-baccalaureate work in Art History and in Instructional Systems.
She has enjoyed teaching studio art courses, art history, and humanities since 1990, beginning at Pasco Hernando Community College and arriving full-time at CF’s Lecanto campus in 1997.
In addition to faculty responsibilities, Michele Wirt has also been adviser to literary arts magazine In the Write Mind, and facilitator of the Jerome Endowment for Cultural Environment on the Lecanto campus.
Michele was the recipient of the Stars award for teaching excellence, and also received an award for Innovation in Teaching, Learning, and Technology. She co-developed and team-taught IDS 1306, Interdisciplinary Studies: Math, Science, and Art. She has also developed and currently teaches online courses in Basic Design and Art History.
Ms. Wirt has exhibited locally, as well as in Florence Italy, and in Harlem N.Y. Her current artwork includes a “fetish series” in black and white, and her inspirations include jazz and blues music. Her two daughters, ages 13 and 4, are aspiring artists.
Michele is a regular contributor to the Citrus County Chronicle with her arts commentary column “Wirt’s Word”. Future plans include sculpture and painting projects for the Lecanto campus buildings.
