What Drafters and Designers Do
Drafters prepare all types of drawings and documents. They draw with drafting instruments or with computer-aided drafting (CAD) systems. They work from the ideas, notes, and rough sketches of their supervising architect or engineer. Being able to interpret instructions and follow directions is essential. Designers are usually outstanding drafters with many years of experience. As drafters become less and less dependent upon their supervising architect or engineer for direction, they evolve into designers. The highly technical parts of their designs, however, are often designed by a licensed architect or engineer.
