In seven years, community college students have donated more than 1 million items to local community relief agencies through Project Graduation. Across the country, food banks are in need of donations. According to the New York City Coalition against Hunger, community food pantries and food banks reported serving 28 percent more people in New York in 2008 than in 2007 yet nearly 69 percent reported not having enough food to meet the increased demand. According to a 2004 report by the United Nations, hunger and low literacy rates are almost always found to be concurrent. The need for action is at an all-time high.
