Author Matt Batt to Speak at CF Jan. 29
Jan. 8, 2017
The College of Central Florida will host a reading by fiction and creative nonfiction author Matt Batt Wednesday, Jan. 29, at its Ocala Campus, 3001 S.W. College Road. The reading will be held at 12:30 p.m. in Building 8, Room 110. There is no fee to attend.
Batt will read from his book, “Sugarhouse,” a memoir about his first house-buying experience. Batt and wife, Jenae, buy the home of a former drug dealer in Salt Lake City and renovate it.
“There is something essentially American about fixing up a house,” he writes. “Something perfectly democratic about doing it yourself. About not having a single damned idea, whatsoever, about the difference between a router and a planer but going right on and doing it anyway.”
Batt is an assistant professor of English and creative writing at the University of St. Thomas in St. Paul, Minn. His reviews, creative nonfiction and fiction have appeared in publications such as Mid-American Review, Fifth Wednesday, Tin House, and Salt Lake Magazine. He is almost finished with a collection of essays about rock climbing, beef-eating, parenting, and baking sourdough bread called “The Enthusiast.”
