CF Awarded Grant to Support GED Completion in Levy County

June 27, 2013

The College of Central Florida has been awarded a $10,000 grant from the Dollar General Literacy Foundation to support the adult literacy project Finish Up! Levy.

Finish Up! Levy is a targeted program for adults with partial General Education Development scores; the goal is to bring successful adult learning strategies to the citizens of Levy County who are restricted by transportation and technology barriers. Short term “Boot Camps” targeted for math, English and reading are available as a result of the grant funding. The grant will also assist the college in continuing to strengthen efforts to promote literacy.

“CF is honored to receive the grant and excited about the difference it will make for the citizens of Levy County, CF’s most rural county,” said Provost Marilyn Ladner. “The program will bring instructors, technology and materials to our community partners, the public libraries, during designated days and times for a remedial course to prepare students to take the next available GED exam.”

CF is receiving this grant as Dollar General celebrates its 20th anniversary this year. During the two decades, the foundation has awarded more than $81 million in grants to nonprofit organizations which helped more than 4 million individuals begin the steps toward literacy or continued education.

“At Dollar General, we are passionate about our mission of serving others throughout the communities we serve,” said Rick Dreiling, Dollar General’s chairman and CEO. “It’s exciting to see the Dollar General Literacy Foundation’s outreach in action as we partner with organizations to further education and literacy and make a real difference in people’s lives.”
