Timber Harvesting Equipment Program Offered for the Third Year at CF Levy

College of Central Florida will offer an eight-week Timber Harvesting Equipment program May 6 through June 27 at the Jack Wilkinson Levy Campus, 15390 N.W. Highway 19, Chiefland. Classes meet Monday through Thursday in the morning for the first five weeks and then for a full day the last three weeks.

The program is open to 12 students and includes classroom instruction and field trips to local logging companies and mills. Students will receive OSHA-10 and CPR certification. Upon completion of five weeks, students will be registered for the Master Logger Certification course and exam. The final three weeks of the program will include on-site training and cover harvesting a section of timber donated by the Florida Forestry Association using a skidder, fellow-buncher and loader. Support is offered through industry partnerships with Usher Land and Timber, Loncala Inc. and the Florida Department of Forestry.

Due to a generous scholarship, students can attend the program for free. The program includes all assessments required for registration, textbooks, fees, personal protective equipment and tuition. Students must be at least 18 years old to participate. Deadline to submit an application is Friday, April 19.

CF Corporate College Partners with the Citrus County Chamber to Offer Business Series

The College of Central Florida Corporate College is partnering with the Citrus County Chamber of Commerce to provide training monthly for local businesses, industry, nonprofit and government entities to address specific management and employee needs. Each interactive, two-hour workshop will provide practical and useful tips, tools and techniques that attendees can start using right away to improve skills for success.

Each workshop will be offered twice a month at the Citrus Learning and Conference Center at the Citrus Campus, 3800 S. Lecanto Highway, Lecanto; Citrus County Chamber of Commerce, 915 N. Suncoast Blvd., Crystal River; or the Citrus County Building Alliance, 1196 S. Lecanto Highway, Lecanto. Workshops are $29 each.

Workshops include advanced leadership, community knowledge, customer service, cybersecurity, basic supervision, business networking, goal-setting and accountability, human resources basics, managing for success, marketing, and social media.

CF International Film Series Wraps Up March 5

The College of Central Florida’s International Film Series wraps up the 2018-2019 season with “Omar” on Tuesday, Feb. 12, “Selma” on Tuesday, Feb. 26, and “Wadjda” on March 5. Shows start at 2 p.m. at the Appleton Museum and at 7 p.m. at the Ocala Campus in the Humanities and Social Sciences Building 8, Room 110.

  • “Omar” is about a Palestinian baker who is arrested after the death of an Israeli soldier and agrees to work as an informant. This film is in Arabic and Hebrew with English subtitles. It is not rated and has a total run time of 98 minutes.
  • “Selma” is a true story that chronicles a three-month period in 1965, when Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. led a dangerous campaign to secure equal voting rights in the face of violent opposition. This film is English and is rated PG-13. It has a total run time of 125 minutes.
  • “Wadjda” is the first feature film directed by a woman in Saudi Arabia, Haifaa al-Mansour, who tells the touching story of Wadjda, a 10 year old struggling with the restrictions placed on her by religion and tradition. The CF International Film Series presents this film in honor of International Women’s Day. This film is in Arabic with English subtitles. It is rated PG-13 and has a total run time of 95 minutes.

Viewings are free at CF. Series membership, which includes fall and spring screenings at the Appleton Museum of Art, is $15 for individuals, $25 for dual membership and includes a bonus film each year. Appleton Painting on Loan to Museum Marmottan Monet, Paris

The Appleton Museum of Art, College of Central Florida, will loan an important Orientalist work from the permanent collection, “Odalisque” by Jean-Léon Gérôme.

In late February, the small but exquisite painting will travel to the Museum Marmottan Monet, located in the 16th arrondissement of Paris with over 300 Impressionist and Post-Impressionist paintings by Claude Monet. In 1966, Michel Monet, the painter’s second son, bequeathed his property in Giverny to the French Academy of Fine Arts and his collection of paintings, inherited from his father, to the Museum Marmottan Monet. This donation endowed the museum with the largest Monet collection in the world.

The Appleton’s “Odalisque” will be part of a special exhibition entitled, “L’Orient des peintres, du rêve à la lumière,” organized by guest curator Emmanuelle Amiot-Saulnier. On view March 7-July 21, the show will feature 60 masterpieces from the most important public and private collections in Europe and the United States, such as Musée du Louvre and Musée d’Orsay in Paris, the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam, and the Clark Art Institute in Williamstown, Massachusetts. The comprehensive exhibition aims to reveal a new look at Orientalist painting and the birth of modern art.

CF Recognized as a Tree Campus for the 10th Year

The College of Central Florida has earned Tree Campus USA recognition for its dedication to campus forestry management and environmental stewardship. This is the 10th year that CF has been recognized.

Tree Campus USA is a national program that honors colleges, universities and their leaders for promoting healthy management of their campus forests and for engaging the community in environmental stewardship. Tree Campus USA is a program of the Arbor Day Foundation.

CF met the five core standards of tree care and community engagement in order to receive 2018 Tree Campus USA status. The standards are establishing a campus tree advisory committee; providing a campus tree-care plan; dedicating annual expenditures on the campus tree-care plan; participating in an Arbor Day observance; and instituting a service-learning project to engage students.

“The Arbor Day foundation requires we have a tree-care plan,” said Stephen MacKenzie, CF senior professor of Environmental Sciences. “We also report on the related service activities to qualify for tree campus.”

The Arbor Day Foundation launched Tree Campus USA 11 years ago and continues to honor colleges and universities for effective campus forest management and engaging students and staff in conservation goals. Currently, there are 364 campuses across the United States with this recognition.

Master Artist Workshop With Sue Primeau at the Appleton Museum of Art

The Appleton Museum of Art, College of Central Florida, will present a watercolor workshop with Sue Primeau as part of the Master Class Series, designed for those who are ready to take their work to the next level.

Whether a beginner, intermediate or advanced, it’s time to have fun painting with watercolor. In this four-part workshop, learn at your own pace with plenty of hands-on painting time in class and one-on-one instructor assistance with informative critiques. Materials not included; a supply list will be provided upon registration.

Workshop dates are Thursdays, Feb. 21, March 7, March 14 and March 28, 6-8 p.m. Cost is $125 for Appleton members; $150 for nonmembers.

CF Foundation 2019 Taste Event Set for March 2 with New Twist

The College of Central Florida Foundation’s annual Taste of Ocala will have a new twist this year at a new location: CF’s newest campus Vintage Farm. “Taste at the Farm” will be on Saturday, March 2, from 6:30-9 p.m., at 4020 S.E. Third Ave, Ocala.

In 2016, the college received its largest gift on record from the Vintage Farm family. The gift of the 103-acre Vintage Farm has allowed CF to expand Equine Studies and Agribusiness programs to include a bachelor’s specialization in equine studies and plans are underway to begin a one-year cattle management certificate program.

Ocala’s favorite “food and philanthropy” event will feature live music and samplings from local restaurants. CF Study Abroad Program Open to Community

The first is an art, history and humanities trip to Paris and London from May 22-June 5.  Total cost is approximately $4,270 and includes 13 nights’ accommodations, all ground transportation, three traditional dinners, daily continental breakfast and full time guide. Program price is an estimate until tickets are finalized.

Trip highlights include a 10-day LondonPass, Westminster walking tour, St. Paul’s Cathedral, National Gallery, British Museum, market visits, Thames River Boat Cruise, Paris walking tour, Eiffel Tower, Louvre and Musee d’Orsay.

Master Artist Workshop with Tyrus Clutter at the Appleton Museum of Art

The Appleton Museum of Art, College of Central Florida, will present a bookmaking and printmaking workshop with CF Associate Professor of Art Tyrus Clutter. This workshop is part of the Master Class Series, designed for those who are ready to take their work to the next level.

Workshop participants will make relief prints and combine them into a one-of-a-kind handmade book. This two-day workshop is scheduled Friday and Saturday, Feb. 22-23, 1-5 p.m. Cost is $75 for Appleton members and $95 nonmembers; all supplies are included.
