CF’s Appleton Museum of Art Announces 2022 Mobile Photography Winners

The Appleton Museum of Art, College of Central Florida, is pleased to announce the winners of the eighth annual Mobile Photography Contest & Exhibition.

Throughout the month of July, the Appleton received 1,073 mobile photo submissions – the most entries ever received! Photos were inspired by four categories: Accidentally Awesome, In Motion, Nature and Portrait. Photos submitted by participants of all ages from the local community, across the country and beyond were taken using a variety of mobile devices, such as phones and tablets.

“We are thrilled to have surpassed last year’s number of entries with an astounding 1,073 photos – a record high! Over the past eight years it’s been rewarding to watch the contest grow and be able to continue showcasing every entry received,” said Victoria Billig, Appleton Museum assistant director. “We thank all the participants for sending us their photos and are proud to have their creativity on display in the museum in the Mobile Photography Exhibition.”

All 1,073 photos are on view at the museum through Sept. 11. The three winning photos from each category were selected by Mark Anderson, a local photographer who enjoys shooting portraits, old houses and abandoned places. His full-time job is with the public relations team for Marion County, where you can also find many of his photos of local events and other happenings around the county. He was editor-in-chief of the College of Central Florida Patriot Press student newspaper, and his photos have been featured in Locala Magazine, the Ocala Gazette and other local publications. He believes photography is for anyone and says you don’t need a fancy camera setup to take a nice photo — all you need is a good eye, so get shooting!

“Art for all once again rings true,” said Appleton Museum Director Jason Steuber. “Participation in the arts and sharing unique photos of the extraordinary in the everyday are what make our community shine in this annual contest and exhibition.”

Regular museum admission fees apply to see the exhibition, however, visitors can enjoy free admission on Sept. 3 for Free First Saturday. The winning photos are posted online at AppletonMuseum.org.

CF Appleton Museum of Art Announces Maharajah Flamenco Trio Concert and Composer-in-Residence Program

The Appleton Museum of Art, College of Central Florida, is pleased to announce a performance by the award-winning Maharajah Flamenco Trio on Sept. 15, 6-8 p.m. Tickets are $30; cash bar available. Tickets can be purchased at AppletonMuseum.org or in person at the museum’s Visitor Services desk.

The Sept. 15 performance will include the world premiere of their newest song, “Escucha el Mar (Listen to the Sea),” an original composition by the trio’s classical and flamenco guitarist Silviu Ciulei. After their well-attended performance at the Appleton Museum of Art earlier this year, Appleton director Jason Steuber invited Ciulei to become the inaugural composer-in-residence for the museum. In spring 2022, the musician spent time in the museum visiting the artworks and found inspiration in a bronze sculpture called “Neapolitan Fisherboy,” c. 1860, by Jean Baptiste Carpeaux (French, 1827-1875).

The sculpture, on view in the museum’s second-floor European galleries, depicts an adolescent boy holding up a conch shell to his ear. On his object of inspiration, Ciulei says, “After the last couple of years we have had, I wanted to choose something positive. When looking at the artwork and thinking about the text for the vocals, I knew I could do so much more just by involving this teenage boy listening to the sea. Maybe he is remembering a person he loves, or his love at home, or the love of his parents. The inspirational options are so many that it allows me to play with words and ideas when figuring out the lyrics.”

Adding a composer-in-residence is another way the museum is carrying out Arthur Appleton’s vision, Steuber explained.

“Silviu was the ideal fit for the composer in residence program’s inaugural artist as he and the Maharajah Flamenco Trio are global citizen musicians and educators with ties to Florida and the Appleton,” Steuber said. “Mr. Appleton’s vision for the museum to be a place for art for all aligns with this multidisciplinary program.”

The September concert will be the first opportunity for museum visitors to experience new music inspired by art.

“We couldn’t think of a better way to kick off of our Composer-in-Residence program than by working with our friends Maharajah Flamenco Trio,” said Assistant Director Victoria Billig. “We hope you’ll join us on Sept. 15 for what will absolutely be an inspirational and heartfelt performance by these Global Music Award winners.”

The Appleton Museum, Artspace and Store are open Tuesday-Saturday, 10 a.m.-5 p.m., and Sunday, noon-5 p.m. A campus of the College of Central Florida, the Appleton Museum of Art is located at 4333 E. Silver Springs Blvd., Ocala, east of downtown on SR 40 (exit 352 east off I-75 or exit 268 west off I-95). Parking is free. For more information, call 352-291-4455 or visit AppletonMuseum.org.

Ira Holmes International Film Series Returns at CF

Films from across the globe that center around themes of humor and perseverance will take center stage in this year’s Ira Holmes International Film Series at the College of Central Florida. A full season of in-person film events kicks off Sept. 13.

“As the late, great Charlie Chaplin proclaimed, ‘A day without laughter is a day wasted,’” said series founder and CF Professor Ira Holmes. “We’re proud to announce that we’re back after two seasons of stream-from-home films, drive-in screenings and virtual film talks. We made it work during a difficult time for our community and our supporters. Now we’re ready to resume seeing movies together in an auditorium with the ability to share our thoughts and feelings. Laughter is therapy, and smiles are also acceptable! In the spirit of the much-loved film classic ‘Singin’ in the Rain,’ we’re ready to ‘make ’em laugh.’”

This year’s first film will be “Wild Men,” with screenings on Tuesday, Sept. 13, at 2 p.m., at the Appleton Museum, and at 7 p.m., at the CF Ocala Campus. In this 2021 Danish film, Martin sets off into the forest in a misguided attempt to overcome his midlife crisis – armed with only a bow and some animal skins. A chance meeting with a fugitive leads to a twisted trip through the fjords with police, drug runners and his family close behind. Martin’s quest for manhood leads to deep and hilariously uncomfortable realizations about the presumed masculine ideal.

Series Schedule:

Sept. 13 – “Wild Men”

Sept. 27 – “The Farewell”

Oct. 11 – “Tony Manero”

Oct. 25 – Appleton Museum 35th Anniversary Double Feature: “House of Dracula” and “Babette’s Feast”

The double feature will begin at noon at the Appleton Museum and 5 p.m. at the CF Ocala Campus. Special guest Patricia Tomlinson will introduce “Babette’s Feast” at 6:30 p.m. and will lead a discussion after the evening screening.

Nov. 8 – “Breaking Bread”

Jan. 17 – “Victoria & Abdul”

Jan. 31 – “Parasite”

Feb. 14 – Scary Movie Date Night: “Get Out”

On Feb. 15 at 12:30 p.m., Dr. Gilbert Rodman will lead a “Get Out” Black History Month film talk via Zoom. Guests can also participate in person at the CF Ocala Campus in Building 8, Room 110.

Feb. 28 – “Neptune Frost”

March 14 – “La Ciénaga”

All films will be shown Tuesdays at 2 p.m. at the Appleton Museum of Art, 4333 E. Silver Springs Blvd., Ocala, and at 7 p.m. at the College of Central Florida, 3001 S.W. College Road, Building 8, Room 110, unless otherwise noted. Films at the Ocala Campus are free and open to the public. Films at the Appleton are free to all museum and film series members; nonmembers pay museum admission. Films may contain mature content.

“Hamilton” Talk Kicks Off CF Stearns Speaker Series

Fans of the “Hamilton” musical won’t want to miss the inaugural event in the College of Central Florida’s Stearns Speaker Series. Robert Watson, Ph.D., will present “Alexander Hamilton: Man, Myth, Musical” on Monday, Sept. 19, at 12:30 p.m. at the Dassance Fine Arts Center on the CF Ocala Campus, 3001 S.W. College Road. The lecture will be followed by a reception at 2 p.m. in the college’s Clifford B. Stearns Learning Resources Center.

Dr. Watson is a distinguished professor of American history and an Avron Fogelman research professor at Lynn University. He’ll share the intriguing backstory of Hamilton’s Jewish roots and hardscrabble upbringing as well as a fun fact-check of the musical and a closer look at the history behind some of the show’s iconic scenes.

“The speaker series will provide an opportunity for the college community and citizens in Marion and the surrounding counties to meet and hear from distinguished Americans,” said Cliff Stearns, who established the Friends of Cliff Stearns Endowed Chair through a gift to the CF Foundation in December 2020. The series aims to bring national and regional speakers on history, political science and technology to the CF campus to benefit both students and the community.
