CF Honors Simpson with Citrus Campus Renaming

“Wilton Simpson has been a steadfast champion for the College of Central Florida and higher education in general, and we are proud to recognize him with the renaming of the CF Wilton Simpson Citrus Campus,” said Dr. Jim Henningsen, CF president. “He has worked to ensure that CF receives the recognition and financial support needed to grow high-demand academic programs, employ the highest quality faculty and staff, expand our facilities, and invest in needed maintenance.”

Simpson is a product of the Florida College System, a fifth-generation Floridian, a lifelong farmer and has served as a member of the Florida Senate since 2012. He currently represents the 10th district, which includes Citrus, Hernando and part of Pasco County.

“The College of Central Florida has been ahead of the curve in producing the workforce that is needed for tomorrow’s jobs,” Simpson said. “Whether our community has needed nurses, engineers or entrepreneurs, CF has been a leader. It makes it much easier for the Legislature to provide resources when we know that one plus one is equaling three or four, not just two.”

The Florida state budget approved by the governor on June 2 includes $13.65 million for a Health Science Technology Education Center at the Ocala Campus in addition to operational expenses for new health sciences programs slated to begin in 2023, new positions to support critical needs within the college, and maintenance repair and renovation projects, which will ensure health safety and ADA compliance. In addition, the CF Foundation received $150,000 to support educational outreach at the Appleton Museum.

“Simpson recognized our strategic approach to managing resources, and as a result, our students, team and community will benefit for years to come,” Henningsen said.

Costumes Now on View in CF Appleton Museum of Art’s “Finding Beauty’ Exhibition

The Appleton Museum of Art, College of Central Florida, announces the addition of Ocala Civic Theatre’s “Beauty and the Beast” costumes to the “Finding Beauty” exhibition.

A unique collaboration between the Appleton and OCT, “Finding Beauty” merges costume drawings and more from the theatre’s production of “Beauty and the Beast” with works from the Appleton collection that inspired them. After a highly successful run of performances, “Beauty and the Beast” has come to a close and a selection of costumes are now on view in the museum’s “Finding Beauty” galleries.

The intricate and thoughtfully designed costumes are the masterpieces of Eryn Brooks Brewer, OCT’s award-winning costume designer. Working closely with museum staff, Brooks Brewer gained inspiration from two- and three-dimensional Rococo-style art and objects in the collection. With the addition of the costumes to “Finding Beauty,” museum visitors are fully immersed in the creative design process from start to finish, seeing how a static object, such as a clock, can eventually become the costume for a living actor to magically transform into a character such as Cogsworth.

The exhibition also includes set photos, video, a touch table of fabrics and costume embellishments, a photo op with props, and more.

On Saturday, Aug. 6, the community is invited to a special Photo Op With Belle event, from 10:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m. There is no fee to pose with Princess Belle. Admission to the museum is free all day, 10 a.m.-5 p.m., as part of the monthly Free First Saturday program. The “Finding Beauty” exhibition is open through Jan. 15, 2023.

The Appleton Museum, Artspace and Store are open Tuesday-Saturday, 10 a.m.-5 p.m. and Sunday, noon-5 p.m. A campus of the College of Central Florida, the Appleton Museum of Art is located at 4333 E. Silver Springs Blvd., Ocala, east of downtown on SR 40 (exit 352 east off I-75 or exit 268 west off I-95). Parking is free. For more information, call 352-291-4455 or visit AppletonMuseum.org.

State Funding to Help Bring CF Nursing Building to Fruition

The College of Central Florida will move forward with plans for a new nursing education center, thanks to support from the Florida Legislature and Gov. Ron DeSantis. The $109.9 billion Florida state budget approved by the governor on June 2 includes $13.65 million for a Health Science Technology Education Center at the Ocala Campus in addition to other support for the college.

The new Health Science Education Center will provide modern classroom and labs for the Associate Degree in Nursing program and allow the program to expand to meet workforce needs. Site work and infrastructure are in place, and building construction is scheduled to begin in mid-2023 with anticipated completion for use in Fall 2024. The project has also been awarded additional funding by the Marion County Board of County Commissioners and Marion County Hospital District.

Additional funding approved by the governor will support operational expenses for new health science programs slated to begin in 2023, new positions to support critical needs within the college, and maintenance repair and renovations projects which will provide for ensuring health safety and ADA compliance. In addition, the CF Foundation received $150,000 to support educational outreach at the Appleton Museum.

“We appreciate the support of the Legislature, Gov. Ron DeSantis, and the Department of Education in providing funding that will support our students and community,” said Dr. Jim Henningsen, CF president. “We have been recognized and rewarded for leveraging resources from our partners and reallocating our existing resources to modernize and expand critically needed workforce programs. Our collaborations are ensuring win-win-win solutions for our students, team, business partners and community.”

College of Central Florida Presents Employee Awards

The College of Central Florida honored outstanding employees at its annual Employee Service and Recognition Awards ceremony on May 6.

The Constellation Award for 2022 was presented to Tracey Cornille, Joshua Copeland, Lynn Maltais, Joyce Maly, Catherine McDonough, Elyse Perry and Tonya Price-Ashley for their Campus Clinical Experience project. These nursing instructors innovatively transitioned the Associate Degree Nursing program’s clinical experience model during the pandemic to train students while meeting accreditation standards and accommodating social distancing requirements.
