CF Now Offering IGNITE Transfer Program to FAMU

The College of Central Florida has joined the IGNITE program at Florida A&M University to provide a direct transfer pathway for students attending CF.  This partnership with Florida A&M University guarantees FAMU admission to students who earn an Associate in Arts at CF.

“This new partnership is a huge benefit to our students and community,” said Dr. Jim Henningsen, CF president. “It gives students the opportunity to complete their first two years at CF, where they thrive in smaller classes with our award-winning faculty and programs and pay less in tuition. It is a giant step forward in helping increase the education attainment level of our community by increasing access to bachelor’s degree programs in Marion, Citrus and Levy counties.”

While students who graduate with an A.A. or an articulated Associate in Science degree from a Florida College System institution are guaranteed admission to a state university in Florida, IGNITE guarantees admission to FAMU. A.A. graduates applying for limited access programs at FAMU such as FAMU/FSU College of Engineering, College of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences, School of Nursing, School of Journalism and Allied Health Sciences-Cardiopulmonary, will need to meet the additional admissions and prerequisite requirements for those specific programs.

Students can begin their studies at CF with the knowledge that they will have a seat at FAMU once they attain an A.A. The partnership provides students a smoother transition with admission and enrollment. Since students receive advising from CF and FAMU, they might also find a shorter time to degree completion.

Students can enroll in the FAMU IGNITE program if they have 0-30 academic credits earned.  The purpose of the IGNITE program is to engage students throughout the course of their associates degree, connect them with FAMU academic advisors for specific fields of study, and provide scholarships opportunities for eligible students.  IGNITE participants who maintain a 3.0 GPA or higher are eligible for an IGNITE Card, which grants them free access to most FAMU on-campus and athletic events

CF Foundation Celebrates Successful Fundraising Campaign

“Our faculty and staff, once again, went above and beyond to show students, our peers and the community that those closest to the college’s mission believe in it enough to give beyond their service as employees,” said Dr. Jim Henningsen, CF president.

This year’s campaign theme, “Right Here, Right Now,” generated dollars that will benefit student scholarships, program support and go to areas of greatest need.

“Our faculty and staff never hesitate to step up when asked. Ninety-six percent participation rate is unheard of in these sorts of campaigns and is a true testament to our employees’ belief in our institution and the students we serve,” said Chris Knife, CF Foundation executive director.

Appleton Museum of Art Launches Free Mobile App

The Appleton app provides two mobile tour options, one for children and one for adults. Through its navigational map, tours include stops on the first and second floor permanent collection galleries, as well as outside in the Sculpture Walk. Outside tours highlight Florida artists in their own words through audio recorded by Mike Zeak, who created the outdoor sculpture “Childhood Memories” and John Gamache, who created “Florada.”

A generous donation allowed the museum to fund staff to develop and maintain the app. Appleton Director Jason Steuber said, “The free app engages our young and seasoned visitors through enhanced multimedia opportunities focused on the collection. It is another way for everyone to discover, enjoy and interact with all the Appleton has to offer before, during and after their visit.”

The free app can be downloaded from either the iTunes® App Store or Google Play Store.

CF Recognized as a Military Friendly School

The College of Central Florida has been recognized as a Military Friendly® School, earning the silver level award. The Military Friendly® Schools list is created each year based on extensive research using public data sources for more than 8,800 schools nationwide, input from student veterans, and responses to the proprietary, datadriven Military Friendly® Schools survey from participating institutions.

“The College of Central Florida works hard to ensure our active servicemen and women, veterans and their families receive the best education and support services possible,” said Dr. Saul Reyes, vice president of Student Affairs at CF. “Approximately 300 CF students receive Veterans Administration benefits.”

In 2014, the college opened the Veterans Center at its Ocala Campus, 3001 S.W. College Road. The center was established to serve students and their families and offers a venue for studying and fellowship, a small library, food pantry and more. The center also serves veterans who are no longer receiving education benefits.

Institutions earning the Military Friendly® School designation were evaluated using both public data sources and responses from a proprietary survey. More than 1,000 schools participated in the 2020-2021 survey with 695 earning the designation. The 2020-2021 Military Friendly® Schools list will be published in the May issue of G.I. Jobs magazine and can be found at www.militaryfriendly.com.

Methodology, criteria, and weightings were determined by Viqtory with input from the Military Friendly® Advisory Council of independent leaders in the higher education and military recruitment community. Final ratings were determined by combining the institution’s survey scores with the assessment of the institution’s ability to meet thresholds for student retention, graduation, job placement, loan repayment, persistence (degree advancement or transfer) and loan default rates for all students and, specifically, for student veterans.

CF Recognized as a Tree Campus for 11th Year

Tree Campus USA is a national program that honors colleges, universities and their leaders for promoting healthy management of their campus forests and for engaging the community in environmental stewardship. Tree Campus USA is a program of the Arbor Day Foundation.

“Tree Campuses and their students set examples for not only their student bodies but the surrounding communities showcasing how trees create a healthier environment,” said Dan Lambe, president of the Arbor Day Foundation. “Because of College of Central Florida’s participation, air will be purer, water cleaner and your students and faculty will be surrounded by the shade and beauty the trees provide.”

CF met the five core standards of tree care and community engagement in order to receive 2019 Tree Campus USA status. The standards are establishing a campus tree advisory committee; providing a campus tree-care plan; dedicating annual expenditures on the campus tree-care plan; participating in an Arbor Day observance; and instituting a service-learning project to engage students.

“We engage our students in a number of environmentally focused activities each year, and in recent years have collaborated with CF Appleton Museum of Art to include an art element in our appreciation of the environment,” said Stephen MacKenzie, CF senior professor of Environmental Sciences. “

The Arbor Day Foundation launched Tree Campus USA 12 years ago and continues to honor colleges and universities for effective campus forest management and engaging students and staff in conservation goals. Currently, there are 385 campuses across the United States with this recognition.
